THE RISING OF CHATHAM

"Until the result of the Epsom was cabled last weekend,'it was not certainly known whether. J[. Pike or R. Reed would be on the favourite, Chatham. At first it.was stated that; Reed would be aboard, OTjing to Pike's having been engaged for Bronze Hawk, then later it was said that Fike would have the mount, as Bronze Hawk was an unlikely.starter, but when Bronze Hawk met the final acceptance doubt again arose. The position is now explained by the following paragraph from a Sydney W. Hadley, owner of Bronze Hawk, who ruled as favourite for the Epsom Handicap for several weeks, and until Chatham began his series of victories, said, at Victoria Park on September 20, that he did not intend holding the leading jockey, J Pike, to the engagement to ride Bronze Hawk in the rich A.J.C. spring mile. ■'Earlier in the season I was extremely confident of Bronze' Hawk's piospocts in the Epsom Handicap," said Mr. Hadlcy, '•and I considered it advisable to fcenuc the sei vices of the best jockey possible. "Bronze Hawk, howevei, disappointed badly at Randwick and ag.iin at Rosehill, and in the circumstances I would liot think ol holding Pike to the engagement. T have not decided definitely whether Bronze Hawk will be a runner or not. There is still plenty of- time to go into that- matter."' When' seen later in the afternoon, Pike paid a tribute to Mr. Iladley's sporting gesture.
