EUCHRE PARTIES

FOR THE SCHOOLS

REQUEST TO MR. FU^SSS

"I will bo very pleased to go int» the matter with my colleagues and sea what can be clone to give, relief to tha school committees in a work in-which they deserve every encouragement," said the Prime Minister (the Et. Hon. G. W. Forbes), when replying to a deputation, representative of - every; branch of school activity, which waited on him last evening asking that opportunity should be given to, enable the immediate passage through Parliament of the School Committees Facili* ties BUI. The purpose of the^Bill, which has been introduced by Mr. K. McKeea (Labour, Wellington South), is to legalise card parties which have been declared to be a contravention of the Gaming Act, 1908. Mr. MeKeon and other speakers stressed the importance of the work: school committees were performing, and pointed out that in addition to providing school requisites as a result of the proceeds from card parties, school committees had been able to supply, food and clothing to children in straitened circumstances. Mr., McKeen said that all the members of ' the House, with the exception of . two, were in favour of the Bill, and those two had stated that they would not oppose it. The Bill provided that the card parties could be held, only on the issue of a permit from the Minister of. Justice. Mr. Forbes expressed sympathy with' the deputation's request,,but. pointed out that any legislation.would have to be the subject of careful investigation. It had not been intended'by the Legislature that entertainments such as the deputation had in mind should be prohibited. . Mr. B. Semple (Labour, Wellington East): In tho meantime, could the Minister of Justice advise the police t» keep "out of the picture"? .> The Minister of Justice (the Hon. J« G. Cobbe), who was associated with th« Prime Minister in receiving the deputation, said that the police were very, sympathetic. It had been'found that certain private people had been conducting euchre parties for their owai profit. . : ' :■ ■ .' ■'
