AN IMPORTANT DETAIL
The efficient staking of plants in many gardens is. a thing to which, considering its importance, little attention is given. First make a tie on the support and leave two loose ends, which should in turn be tied round the plant. This allows -the plant freedom of move-
ment, and at the same time gives it the requisite.support. One of the best knots to use for the first operation is known as two half hitches, two loops, one below the other. This knot will never slip, even on the smoothest surfaces, and consequently the tie always remains in the same place on the cane or support. The illustrations give the method of tying the knot. Make a loop as in Fig. 1, th.en another exactly similar, and place loop No. 2 underneath loop No. 1 as in Fig. 2. Thread over the top of the stake and pull tightly, leaving sufficient at «ach end to tie round the plant, as in Fig. 3.
