WEATHER FOR SEPTEMBER

Although the average temperature was slightly cooler . than usual,, the month of September, one of Wellington's traditional "windy mouths," was notable for its absence of strong winds. With the exception of a gale that blew on September. 19 and 20 the strength of the wind was below the average. From September 1. until September 17 the weather was mostly fine and'mild with an absence of strong winds. The rest of the month was less pleasant. The rainfall was rather less than average, and the amount of sunshine was considerably above the average. The mean pressure at 9 a.m. was 30.046 in, the average for September boing 29.938. The maximum temperature was 56.1deg, the September average being 56.6deg. The mean minimum temperature was 45.1deg, arid the average 44.9. The approximate mean temperature was 50.6, which was onetenth below the September average. The highest maximum, temperature was C 5 degrees, recorded on September 9, and the lowest minimum 37.2 degrees, recorded on September 6. The mean minimum on the grass was 40.4 degrees, the lowest being 28.9 degrees.on September 6. This was the only frost recorded. . . . The average run of the wind in .24 hours was 214 miles, the previous average being 247 miles. The month was therefore remarkable on the whole for an absence of wind. A strong northerly gale set in on September 19 and blew throughout the 20th. The run |of the wind in the 24 hours preceding September ,20 was 517 miles and on the following day 548 miles. The rainfall ! totalled 2.97 m, the normal rainfall for September bein" 3.11 in. Bain fell on fourteen days the average in this case being 15. The recorded sunshine for the month was 192.1 hours. There were, however, four days on which there was no sunshine, three of these being September 19, 20, and 21. The heaviest rain occurred on September 20, the total for that day being 0 64in. Fresh snow fell on the Tarariias on September 25, and from then till the end of the month there was a prevalence of cold winds.
