EMBARGO LIFTED
QUEENSLAND PINEAPPLES
The Government's decision to lift the embargo' on the importation of Queensland pineapples was announced last night by the Minister of Customs (the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates). A few months ago the ban on South Australian citrus fruits was lifted". The embargo on Australian fruit was imposed last December on the ground that the United States of America would not allow the entry there of New Zealand fruit because of the danger from Mediterranean fly, which was prevalent, in some parts of the Commonwealth. As the result of negotiations with America, the embargo on South Australian citrus fruits was lifted, and under a quota system shipments have been arriving periodically. Tho importation of Queensland pineapples into New Zealand has now been agreed to until further notice. It is hoped by the New Zealand fruitgrowers that they will be able to find a market for their products next season in America. There are some doubts as to whether there will be an opening in America for Dominion apples, owing to the supply of home-grown fruit but it is anticipated that there will be a demand for New Zealand pears.
