SILK SOX WORKING WELL

(Special from "Hurry On.") NEW PLYMOUTH, September 29. Orapai was given his first gallop. eince returning from Australia on Tuesday morning, when he reeled off half a mile in 50 3-ssec in easy style. He is coming to hand quickly,- and looks better than he has ever done previously. He may have his next outing at Waverley. R. Barlow is beginning to send Refresher along again, and the aged son of Tea Tray demonstrated that he has lost none of his pace by running half a mile yesterday morning very easily in 52 2-ssec. However, he is still looking on the big side, and it may be some time before he races again. Tho name of Cortega has been allowed for the Grandcourt—Tigritiya filly .in R. Johnson's stable. Though she has not yet been seriously tried, 6he has shown a nice turn of pace over two furlongs. She is not likely to race before Christmas. Lalla Quex, in the same stable, is building up into a fine-looking mare. So far she has been restricted to half and threequarter pace work, but she is always anxious to go faster. This half-sister to Ridgmount' should win races this season. A particularly good effort yesterday morning was that of Silk Sox, who beat Headmistress (doing her final trial for Foxton) by a short margin over six furlongs in the remarkably fast time o£lmin 15 2-ssec, the last half in 51sec. Headmistress, who is a fit filly; was admittedly doing her work comfortably at the finish, and she was carrying nearly a stone more' weight, but the performance of Silk Sox was none the less most impressive.. This four-year-old Royal Divorce gelding, who is owned by Messrs. S. and R- G. Topless, of Urenui, had his first race at the recent Taranaki Hunt Meeting to finish second to St. Clara, and, he should not be long in improving on'that performance.
