NO DOUBT HAS COLD
HAWERA TRACK JOTTINGS
(Special from "Limited.") HAWERA, September 20. Of the Hawera horses that competed at Wanganui the promising Grandcourt —Cleasanta mare St. Clara was the only one to score place-money, going under narrowly to Plateau. The win, however, had a full Hawera flavour,- as Plateau, a full-brother to Crown Area, was "bred here by Mr. A. Appleyard. . No Doubt was badly left in liis race and was never prominent. On returning home it was found that he was suffering from a cold and was placed under treatment. Diagano was solidly supported on. the second day and went.a good race just outside the money. Probably six furlongs would have suited him better. His work on the track since suggests that he may make amends next time out. ' During the progress of the meeting Little Doubt was leased by his owner (Mr. A. O. Casey) to T. R. George, the Blenheim trainer, who will endeavour to make a hurdler of him. While under- O. Cox's care he was ' schooled a couple of times, performing, well for a novice. Aga Khan had a race the first day at Wanganui and he appears to have bene-, fited with it. Next, time he faces the barrier he will need to be more seriously considered. The Tiger was not at his best and failed to finish on in his races. The class he had to meet was - good, and he will do better at smaller fixtures. He is to race at Waverley next month. On account of the wet weather Richfield was not taken down to Wanganui and will be prepared for the Waverley Cup, a race in which he was narrowly beaten by Gibraltar two seasons ago. CARFEX'S PROGRESS. Carfex is going along splendidly in his Avondale Cup preparation. He has done a fair amount of sprinting, and from now on his tasks will be over more ground. After barrier practice on Tuesday he ran half a mile very attractively -in 50% sec. Sandlark, who fell heavily ori the track recently, has recovered, and he resumed exercise work this week. Havering is again a regular attendant on the tracks. Going easily over the first three furlongs yesterday, he com:, ■pleted five furlongs in lmin 12% sec, the last two in 27see. He is very big in condition and is likely to take some time to reach racing form. ! J. Brown's Grand Knight gelding Arouse is standing up splendidly in his RACING FIXTURES. October 5, T—Dunedin J.C. ' ; preparation,- and' he ;was allowed to run along three furlongs with the Diacquenod t_Av6la'three-year-old in W. Pine's stable. After taking 15sec for. the first furlong, Arouse finished.in front,in 42sec. Both horses -went satisfactorily. J. Fryer's team (Gibraltar, Attentive, Haunui, Weathetzane, "Chief Line, Oriel, and March Alone) was yesterday given routine exercise work only.' M. Conway has worked-a big improvement in the-Daniloff hunter Don Erma, and in a -sprint over three furlongs the gelding finished well in front ,of a filly in the same stable in 40sec. He is a good jumper with any amount of pace, and he promises to be a useful horse ..for future hurdle : races. CALAMINE IN AGAIN. Calamine, who has had; & 'good spell, is back under M. Conway's "care, and is doing road exercise preparatory to resuming track work. She had a strenuous time for several seasons. She just failed on two or three occasions to win. a decent handicap, and, put over hurdles last season, she was moderately' successful, but she may.prove ,a more useful hurdler this term..: . J. Brown has an addition to his team in a four-year-old mare by Royal Divorce from Algar, the dam of Argue, a hack that showed a lot of pace round Taranaki courses a few seasons back. Hawera stables are usually well represented at the Waverley Meeting on Labour Day, and, with the exception of the horses to race at the Wellington Meeting, all the horses in active work here at present will compete.next month. Fryer, for instance, will have a horse practically for every race, his team probably comprising Gibraltar, Attentive, Green Linnet, Haunui, Oriel, March Alone, Chief Line, and Weatherzane. Fryer's apprentice, G. Duncan, is down with influenza, and was not expected to be' able to meet his Foxton riding engagements today. v , ' • . Apart from Whenyakura there are quite a number of two-year-olds making steady progress here, the more forward being ,J. Fryer's Hunting Song—Carniola gelding, Mr. A. Alexander's Diacquenod—Wake Up filly and Hunting Song—Spotlight colt (in Fryer's stable),, and. White Wings, the half-sister by Tea Tray to 'Inflation. O. Cox's Australian-bred colt Friesland, by Friarsdale—Fluency, went sore and has had to be eased up. .R. Brough's Colossus—Lady Egletinc colt is' making good progress and promises to furnish into a good looker, but he will take some time and is not to be hurried.
