The Prime Minister (the Bt. Hon. G. AY. Forbes) left last night for his home at Cheviot, where he is to spend the weekend. He will return to' Welling* ton on Tuesday morning. Mr. F. AY.. Manton returned today; from Sydney by tho AVanganella. The death is reported iv a Press Association telegram from Greymouth. of Mr. James Kennedy^ manager of the Greymouth Municipal Gas AVork3 since 1888. He was born in London in 185G, arid arrived in New Zealand iv 1875. Captain D'A'rcy Maxwell, who visited New Zealand last December after an absence of 30 years and remained seven months in this country—nearly, six months of which were spent in Nelson —has been at Home settling up his affairs in London. He will probably take up permanent residence in Nelson. At tho annual meeting of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce yesterday (reports a'Press Association message from Christchurch), the following officers wero elected:—President, Mr. A. F. AVhitcombe, and H. S. AVilliams. Mr. E. G. Pretty, sub-manager of tha AVestern Australian branch of the Australian Mutual Provident Society, arrived by the AVanganella today from" Sydney. Dr. C. C. Caldenius, lecturer iri geology at tho University of . Stockholm, Sweden, accompanied by his wife, arrived today by the AVanganella from Sydney. Dr. Caldenius will carry out geological investigations in tho South Island, and will remain in tha Dominion until the end of the summer. Mr. A. N. Lawrence, vice-president of the General Motors Corporation, and Mr. C. Evans, of the New York office of tho corporation, arrived today by, the AVanganclla from Sydney on a business visit. Lieut.-Coloncl G. S. Douglas, of Scotland, arrived today from Sydney by the AVanganella, and is tho guest of th« Mayor and Mayoress, Mr. and Mts. T. C. A. Hislop. He is on a- fishing trip and will stay in the Dominion probably until the end of next May. Mr. Noel Newson, of Christchurch, who has been continuing his musical studies in London, returned today by, the AVanJanella. Mr. AY. G. Lodder retired today from tho position of chief engineer of the Gear Meat Company, and the esteem in-which lie.is held was shown in a full muster of employees at the Petone works yesterday, when they bade him farewell. The general-manager of tha company (Mr. J. P. Mackay) was present. Mr. AY. S. Brice, who presided, said that the Petone works were a fine monument to Mr. Lodder, who had seen them grow. Apprentices from the works who had been trained under.Mr. Lodder and his assistants were now in the four quarters of the globe. On behalf of. the employees Mr. Brice presented Mr. Lodder with a wireless set. Other* who spoko briefly were Messrs. A. AVebley, AY. Mcllvride, H. B, Martin, J. Ball, S. Eichardson, AY. A. Cate, and A. E. AVhito, representing different departments of. the works. Mr. Lodder briefly and feelingly, replied, and ha was accorded musical honours. The gathering concluded with the singing of "Auld Lang Sync."
