NAVY V. POLICE

Teams representing the Australian Navy and the Police Force in Wellington played a Rugby football match at Athletic Park yesterday afternoon, and, • although a strong, keen southerly wind made conditions unpleasant, much bright and interesting play was provided. ■ The visitors set a hot pace, backs and forwards moving briskly, and they. maintained their form surprisingly well when facing the strong wind in the second spell. The police, however, were on their mettle, and their defences were not easily broken. They, too, contributed well to a contest which was keen and interesting, with cause for much excitement when the final efforts were being made to clinch victory, the scores at that time being level. It was not until late in the first- spell that the visitors successfully capped one of the strong advances, Braddick scoring a try, which Beyerley failed to convert. In the second spell Best and Barry each scored an unconverted try for the .police, the kicks by Pointon and Webby failing. Beverley made the position 6-alI with" a penalty goal; and at this the scoring ended. The teams were:— Australian Squadron.—Sub-Lieutenant Power; Waters, Dick, Baddick, Horder; Lieutenant Gallahawk (captain)'; Little; Hawkins, Lindsay, Beverley, Wilson, SubLieutenant Morrison; Brown, Lieutenant Parker, Risk. Police.—Pointon; Sutherland, Waugh, Clarke; Best. Cave fcaptain); Rush; Miles, Webby, J. Ward, Barry, Spence, Stevens, Bourk'e, Fell. ' , , Mr. Hooper was the referee. An early match betwene teams from H.M.S. Diomede and the Wellington Fire Brigade was also drawn, neither side scoring. . A small charge of admission: was made to the ground, the proceeds to go to the Wellington Free Ambulance, but .owing to the unfavourable weather the attendance was small. :!„.■,,.
