YOUNG MAN'S LAPSE
: Pleading guilty at the Magistrate's Court today to a charge of stealing a watch and chain, a young man was admitted to probation for a period of twelve month's- by' Mr. E. Page, S.M. Detfective-Sergeant Revell said that on the evening of September 22 the accused accompanied ■ another ' man to a room occupied by two other men. While the occupier was absent from the room for a moment the accused went to a drawer and stole the watch and chain. Counsel for the accused, Mr. Yaldwin, said that it was a very unfortunate case. The acciised had never been in trouble before and was at present studying for a professional career. He stated that he had been in company and had done a certain amount of drinking at a hotel. The accused did not drink very much, and he stated that the liquor was too much for him. The accused did not know how he had come to commit the theft. In the morning he found the watch and chain in his .pocket. He got frightened and ■ decided"to get rid of them. The accused then disposed of them. There was no reason for the offence, and the accused fully realised the seriousness of his position. The Magistrate, after admitting the accused to probation, ordered him to make restitution of £1 15s within one month.
