A SPEEDY TWO-YEAR-OLD

On view in the birdcage at Epsom (Melbourne) last week was the first grey got by Heroic. He is a two-year-old from Fairy Elf, and has been named Spartan. The colt was purchased by Mr. W. Jackson, and is being prepared by Syd. Ferguson. He cost only 200 guineas as a yearling and would be worth a lot more than that now. Speed is written all over Spartan, says one Melbourne critic. A bit "on the leg," ho resembles in make and shape the sire of his dam, Chrysolaus, from whom he .gets his colour. The colt is exceedingly well shaped and has good breadth across tho back. With, his breeding—Chrysolaus. waa one. of the fastest horses imported to Australia from England, and Heroic is noted for the speed lie transmits to his stock—it is little wonder that Spartan has already given every indication of possessing pace.
