PLENTY OF RAIN

IMPROVEMENT TOMORROW

The trough of yesterday's intense depression is now located to the east of the Dominion, but a slight secondary was centred this morning over the central part of the North Island. Hence the forecast issued at noon today is for moderate to strong westerly winds, backing to the south-west, north of Kawhia and Napier, and for moderate but freshening southerly to south-west-erly winds- elsewhere. Over the North Island the -weather is likely to continue to be cloudy and unsettled, with 'further rain and in places heavy falls. In the South Island conditions will be changeable with scattered showers. Temperatures will be cold.: An i improvement, however, may be expected tomorrow.

Yesterday's'weather was unsettled generally, with moderate to 'strong north-westerly winds which were particularly boisterous in the Cook; Strait area. Rain fell in most parts-of the country^ and heavy falls occurred over most of th*e North Island and over'the ■northern part of" the S6nth Island. The greater" part of the South Island, however, . and the coas.tal area ' between Castlepoint and East Cape, escaped with •only light and scattered rain. ,' Since last night winds have moderated considerably, and a change to southerlies has advanced as far north as Cook Strait.

Auckland had a. dull'day yesterday with a moderate northerly wind Rain set in during the night;

■Wellington experienced a boisterous north-westerly wind which, reached a maximum velocity of 66 miles an hour. Intermittent rain fell during the day, but after 3 a.m. today the rain became steady. The fall up to' 9,-, a.m. today totalled 64 points at Kelburn and 90 in Lower Hutt. After midnight the wind decreased in strength, and at 8.30 a.m. today a change to southerlies took place. , ,'■■' Christchurch had sunny and warm weather yesterday until 3 p.m., when skies clouded over. The wind there began by being a light north-easterly in the morning, but it changed to the, west in the afternoon and to the south-west during the night. No rain,'however, had fallen up to 9 a.m. today. .
