The following awards were made at the

Hutt Valley Spring Flower Show which

Mr. Patrick welcomed their Excellencies and apologised, for the absence of Mr. W. Nash, M.P., who is" in' Canada, Sir R. Heaton Rhodes; and Sir Alexander and Lady Roberts. He congratulated Mr. C. E. Buckingham; on his bloom being aeeouled the honour of champion of cham-

'■-■ pious, and Mi-: P^ Sissons,- a young competitor on his "amateur champion bloom. Considering the'tirues, he said, the entries for the show were really good. The Mayor of Xower Hutt (Mr. J. W. : Andrews) joined in the welcome to their Excellencies. , , ... His Excellency, who was greeted witu !■ applause, referred'to the pleasure it gave him to be at the show again, ihe people of Lower Hutt had raised their standard o£ horticultural display" to, so high a plane :: that they would flnd it difficult to keep it up, he said. He congratulated the ■ society on its fine show. The business ' side of the society might serve as an inspiration to:the Minister ot Finance, because he noticed that although the society had income arid expenditure ot over . £400 a year, it was .able to show no greater loss in these depressing times than ■£i 6s 6d, and it was to. be hoped that the improved industrial outlook, to winch so many leading people in New Zealand had referred, would serve to wipe out the , small deficit. His Excellency congratulated the society on>having four shows, : extending over seven days, a year. He hoped the Hutt Valley would retam its . claim of being called the garden suburb 'of Xew Zealand. (Applause.) . Their Excellencies were afterwards entertained at afternoou tea. SPECIAL PRIZES AND TROPHIES. The trophy for the champion of champions among the narcissi was awarded to Mr C. E. Buckingham for his 'Buffo, • which also secured the award for the - best non-trumpet and au R.H.S. silver medal. , (T) ~ ,>, The best trumpet was Koyalist, shown by Mr. H. Poole. - The awards for both, the best trumpet and the best non-trumpet in the amateur class were secured by Mr. P. Sissons ■; with "Honey-boy" and "Kingdom. Air. Sissons, a young exhibitor, was awarded nn R.H.S. certificate for each, of these ex- • hibits. . ~ , , t The tradesmen's trophy for the best col- '> lection of narcissi was secured by the present holder, Mr. W. H. Booth. RHS silver medals were awarded to Mr N B. Gibbons for cinerarias, and ' Mr' E. L. Eiddiford for, polyanthus; • bronze medals to Mrs. J. Mitchell (floral ' display) and Mr. H. Poole and Messrs. C. F. Pilcher and Sons (trade displays); and R.H.S. certificates to the Lower Hutt Borough Reserves Committee (cut flowers), Mr. A. McMillan (trade display). ' Mr. C. Wheatley (anemones), Mr. fe. H. B. Peryman (freesias), and Messrs. Evans and Sawyer (rock garden plants). ■■' The Hutt News trophy for the champion of champions went to Mr. C. E. •.
