A conference of local-body representatives in the Wairarapa heavy traffic district, held in. Masterton yesterday to consider a proposal to allocate heavy traffic fees on a road maintenance basis,i proved abortive. The counties were unanimaus in agreeng to the proposed basis as a fair and reasonable one, but the boroughs were -unable to subscribe to tEat view. The borough Representatives offered to agree to an allocation on a Tevised percentage, and the counties made a counter-offer but no agreement was reached and the meeting dispersed. • . . In the allocation at present in. for'co the eouutics receive five-eighths and the boroughs three-eighths, and the conference called yesterday sought to have the allocation made on a maintenance basis according to the recent regulations. This was opposed by the boroughs, which offered to accept 25 per cent, in place of 374 V CT «cnt- under the present allocation. The counties, however, would not agree.to allow the boroughs more than 20 per cent.
