MAORI CARVING

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—"Tfe Kamanui" protests against the class o£ carving and designs on leather gold as depicting Maori art. Surely he does not imagine that those interested are blind to. the fact that true Maori designing from original creations is almost dead. The perpetrators against whom he advises action are ever seeking the lost fount of "Whakairo" from which the "Tupuna" drew their knowledge, and if "Te Kamanui" has "Tikanga Maori" at heart and knows how to correct the gross misconceptions of would-be Maori carvers and designers, then let him come out on to the "Marae" and let his "great light" ("Te Ramanui") so shine before all men that we may see hig good works in the making and so profit thereby.-—I am, IE HAMAKOEE.
