TWO-YEAR-OLDS' FIRST
WHENUAKURA JUST WINS
'■"" The eleven youngsters, who paraded for ■the Juvenile Plate, the first two-year-1 .pld face of the new season, were a welljmannered lot, and after very little delay !e'i the barrier they were let away to an excellent dispatch. Whenuakura and JBbdyline, two juveniles who have been Vfbing attractive track work, proved de■'tjidedly superior to the others, and a hard "and earnest battle between them down jthe straight founS Whenuakura finally .prevailing by the short margin of half a .jftad. . .; .■.-■
""Whenuakura was slower than some of liis opponents to find his feet, but at the !ph'd'- of a furlong he had raced up to jjodylino in the van. The pair came jnto the straight clear of Capital, Life Ouard, Scholar, Tantara, and Gay Blonde, and they.had the finish wholly to themselves. Capital hung on to-retain third money by a head from Gay Blonde, three lengths behind the-first pair, and after a ■bis gap Tantara was fifth, just in front of JScholar, Redeem, and Morbury, with Pomard last. The winner, who was a warm favourite lioth ways, is a big chestnut gelding by Chief Ruler from the brilliant Achilles sprinter Silver Link, and he is thus a Sill-brother to Silver Rule and Chief "jjjfrk, and a half-brother to the Stewards' Winner, Silvermiue. Unlike his relatives, itSwever, he was not carrying the colours irt' his breeder (Mr. A. Alexander), but tlfoee of the Foxton owner Mr. W. KirkUand> who also races Tenacre. His performance, though giving him only a very jiafrow victory, was easily best in the race, &ttd there looks to be a lot of promise •about him. Incidentally he provided K. "Vjiiitjfe with his first winning ride this seaBOtJ. Bodyline, a brown colt by Lord Quex from the Wormwood mare Nukerakau, is ca«t in a totally different mould from the winner, being very small and unlikely to grow to any size. 'He has speed, however, and after an even dispatch he was Vioon out clear in the lead. An early race •i* likely to come his way.
-»The Trentham-trained Capital did best ■<i,S .the others, but he was never within vansffi of the leaders over the serious part, and he had to be hard ridden to retain £h,e other dividend from Gay Blonde, who came home very strongly after being one «f the rear division for half the journey. ■ !Both these horses should win pood juve'.Aife events this Mason. Another Trcn-
thani aspirant, Redeem, was twice as well supported as the Capital-Morbm-y bracket, which wag at a great place price, but she was at the tail of the field most of the way, though she was running on fairly well at thft end.v ,
