DAMAGE TO SMOKE STACK
A section of the lOOt'fc steel smoke stack at the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company's powerhouse at Frankton was blown down during the heavy gale on Monday. About 8 o'clock in the morning the top 30ft of the stack leaned over at a dangerous angle, and was expected to crash at any minute. The staff immediately switched off the power and made preparations for the fall, which did not occur, however, for several hours. Shortly before noon the top portion broke from the holding stays and crashed through the roof of the casein factory adjoining. In its fall it brought down a tangle of telephone and other overhead wires. Fortunately none of the equipment inside the factory was damaged. As a result of. the fall the ■ casein factory ceased working until late in the afternoon, when an 'auxiliary supply of power became "available. The company's box and butter factories on the same area ■were not affected.
