In addressing members of Parliament «t a pre-sessional meeting of the Otago Ex« pansion League, the Jtayor. (the Rev. E. X. ;Cox) submitted^ .strong . plea fp* Governmental awistauce in the develop* ment of the gold-mining indu'itry. In illustrating the use of modern plant and machinery, he uid that between tha years 1893 and 1900 gold to the amount of 487,000,0000z had been/ won from the the earth, whereas between 1900 and 1933 the amount of gold won totalled no less than 623,000,000o«. ;The Rand in Africa had played, a big -part in securing the world's stock of;'gold, for out. of £6,000,000,000 represented by gold discoveries ore to the value of £1,600,000,000 had come from that district. From a comparatively small aud unimportant town Jphannesburg had sprung into a city with a population of 400.000, the progress the place had made being directly due to the scientific development of the gold industry. The speaker was sure that there were tremendous fields waiting to be opened ujfr in New Zealand, particularly in Otago. ' ■,
