SHANGHAI, September 7.
The three British officers who wers kidnapped near Newchang on March 28 have been released. The successful negotiations with the pirates were conducted by a Japanese officer, Captain Obata,
Four British officers of the steamship Manchang—Mr. A. Blue, the second engineer; Mr. F. Pears, the third engineer', and Messrs. C. Johnson andi W. Hargreaves, junior officers—were captured by pirates off Newchang in March last while the vessel was anchored outside the bar awaiting a pilot. Three junk-loads of pirates suddenly descended on .the vessel. Tho pirates 'maintained a heavy fire, under which- some of them boarded the steamer, intimidated the Chinese crew, and ransacked the vessel. The junks dodged into the shallow estuary of the Liao Eiver when, the captain of the Manchang pursued them. Mr. Pears was released in April for the purpose of delivering the pirates' demands for ransom.
