LAST NIGHT'S AWARDS

Tho-results of two scholarship classes were among the awards announced at last evening's session of the "Wellington Competitions in the Town Hall. Miss Nola Hydo (Brooklyn) won the society's recitation scholarship for ladies or gentlemen, ,16 and under 21, and.Paul Magill (Wellington) won the piano scholarship in tho 13 and under 35 class. The ladies' vocal solo, sung over tho air from 2YA studio, was Avon by-Mrs. Kussell Scoular, of Wsnganui. Tho judge, Dr. Cyril Jenkins, commented on the high standard reached by Mrs. Scoular, and said that tho performances last night wero some of the best he had.ever heard in a contest. The men's 6ection of tho radio class was won by Mr. Hay Trewern, of' Wellington. : The full list of a,wards in classes heard during the day is as follows:—■ PIANO SOLO, 13 and under 15; (a) "Arabeske" (Schumann); (b) own selection; flrst prize, scholarship, presented by the society entitling the winner to free tuition up to the value of ST 7s from any teacher. Dr. Jenkins said that it wus au excellent wiiy of hearing a contest, -because the microiihono magnified tho weaknesses but did not do tho same thing with the virtues. The standard of some of the candidates was exceptionally high. He ■ congratulated Mrs. Scoular on her very fine performance. Htiggins (Nelson), the other recalled competitor, was unable to compete in the final. Twelve entries. The'judge said that the mlcrophono magnified the defects of the winner's voice. Twenty-two entries. This was one of tho best children's sections '3n tho Competitions, remarked the judge. A number reached a very high standard. Pupils of Miss Dorothy Daniel's studio and 3flss Peggy Welch's studio were seen in a further section of the ballet in costume. The selections were "Tho Band Box" and "The Skaters" respectively.
