COLLEGE RUGBY
SILVERSTREAM TOURNEY
OPENING MATCH
For the opening of the triangular Rugby football tournament, with the Wellington and Silverstream St. Patrick's Colleges and St. Bede's (Christchurch) as the participants, conditions yesterday were ideal. The matches are being, played at Silverstream, and ■ the contestants yesterday afternoon were the St. Patrick's Colleges, Silverstream' being successful in a gruelling forward struggle by 13 points to 10. .■ The teams were:— ....... St.-Patrick's, Silverstream.—Vile, O'Connor, Paino, Twohill, Eeid, Wilson (captain), Cropp, Mario, Menehira, McDonnell, Donoghue, Bourke, Hart, O'Connor, CaulSt Patrick's, Wellington.—Parsonage, Timmins (captain), Anderson, Hogan, Hatchard, Brice, Elliott, Meacham \V ooller, Robinson-, Doohan; Fitzgerald,. Moleta, Summers, Gill.. • , Flashes of bright back play relieved much close forward work, though the game was not a spectacular one, the two packs being too evenly matched. In the backs, Hatchard, at first five-eighth, played a sound and varied game for Wellington, and Timmins showed pace and great determinaj tion on the.wing.. Elliott's.work behind the scrum1, was good, and he got the .ball away cleanly. The handling by the Silverstream back line suffered from the determined spoiling of the opposing side. Menehira and Caulton displayed the most dash of the Silverstream forwards; as did Fitzgerald and Wooller for Wellington. A fine penalty kick by K. O'Connor opened the account for the home team,. whose forwards soon had the ball down on St. Patrick's, line again, and Cropp, securing from a ruck, cleverly cut out two men and gave to Twohill, who scored. Wilson's kick brought the score to 8-nil in Silverstream's favour. At this the visitors attacked with great dash. -Elliott secured from a scrum and sent his backs away, Anderson beating Paino and passing opportunely to Hogan, whose try was converted by Parsonage. 8-5. Hard, tight play then ruled for some -time in mid field, the' Blues gradually working down to Silverstream territory, where Hatchard, -working the blind side, nearly sent the speedy Timmins over. The-visiting backs gained the ball from a ruck, and Timmins, outpacing the opposition, scored. Parsonage converted. The halfrtime. score was 10-8 in favour of the town team. In the second spell Silverstream attacked vigorously, though mishandling among the backs spoilt promising movements. Hatchard's well-judged kicking relieved the visitors time and again, turning defence into attack. But the Silverstream forwards. vigorously pressed on, and eventually Menehira scored well out,. Wilson's kick made the score 13-10. Vigorous attacks on both sides kept interest at concert ; pitch, but the; whistle sounded with the visitors on the -. attack, yet without any addition to the score— Silverstream 13, Wellington 10. ■Mr. A..E. Neilson was the referee.
