HABITUAL CRIMINALS
TWO OLD OFFENDERS
Two prisoners, each with- a list of previous convictions, were sentenced to terms: of imprisonment} and in addition were declared habitual criminals by Mr. Justice Reed in the Supreme Court yesterday. They were John Asher and Leslie Clifton Arthur'" Payne. ' '' : ■ Asher appeared for sentence' .on two charges of breakingand entering houses by day at' Lower Hutt with intent, to commit' theft. Ho said that .if , his Honour could see his way clear to give him one' more chance it would be his last appearance in Court. A number of convictions, including one on a charge Of ..arson for which he was sentenced to five years' hard labour, were admitted by-him. He was sentenced to one year's imprisonment on each charge, the sentences to be concurrent. "For the sake, of the community, you'have got to be put somewhere where you. cannot .carry, on. like 'this," said his Honour. '/.'•'. A similar request: for leniency .was made by Payne, who was-up for sentence on two charges of breaking, entering, and ; theft.'
