PETER PAUL'S SURPRISE
It was no wonder that Peter Paul was rank outrider of the field in the Hexlpn Handicap, the principal eVent at the Poverty Bay Hunt Club's Meeting last Saturday, for'he is now seven years old and he had raced only six odd times previously. He led from end to end, and still had over* two lengths in hand at the finish, with horses like Aiguille, Valsier, and Royal Bengal behind him. His first appearance was at Opotiki as a two-year-old, when he ran third, and in two starts the next season ,he also finished third at Opotiki. The following season he was unplaced in two starts, and last season, after missing a term, he ran only once, unsuccessfully at Tauranga in March. It was somewhat surprising to find him racing against open class on Saturday, but probably he was expected to do best at a distance. . He is given in the Turf Register as a brown gelding by Rukumoana from Miseravot, but hie dam is the St. Paul mare Miaere Ouvert, who did some unsuccessful racing a couple of decades ago. Ruku- 1 moana is a 1623 Feramorz—Mayform (by Formative) horse, so that he got Peter Paul when he was a two-year-old colt. Peter Paul is owned *by Mr. J. Moody, and now he has had this success we may see more of him.
