OPERATIONS IN MASTERTON

CHEQUE FORMS STOLEN

(Special to the "Evening Post.") MASTERTON, This Day. A burglar has been operating in ■Mastcrton during the past few days. On Wednesday morning, before 0 o 'clock, entry was made to Dr. Archer Hosking's residence, and several cheque forms and somo stamps were taken from tho surgery. Later in the day, two cheques of £30 each wore presented at the Borough Council's office in payment of Dr. Hosking 's rates, from which the impersonator expected to roceivo a considerable sum in change. Suspecting that there was something amiss, a borough' official -took the cheques to the bank to have the signatures verified, and on finding that they were forged, he called at tho police station to obtain the services of a constable. In the meantime, however, the person who presented the cheques made ofi in the direction of the station, and escaped. ' On Monday night a burglar visited the residence of Mr. W. H. Joliffe, and apparently had a good look around, while Mr. and Mrs. Joliffo were asleep. The intruder took Mr. JolifEo's trousers from the end of the bed into another room, where he emptied tho pockets of 16s in silver. In this ease, also, entry was gained through a window at tho back of tho house. A somewhat similar' incident occurred at the residence of Mr. F. H. Dunderdale. Here the intruder apparently had a good look around the house. Mr. H. A. R. Dunderdale, who sleeps on the porch, was disturbed, and saw a man disappearing through the gateway. It is reported l that several - other places have been entered, and that clothes lines have also been stripped of articles left out during tho night. The police aro reticent regarding these happenings.,
