SOUTHERLIES COMING
Tho last of the present series of westerly depressions 'deepened considerably as it moved over the .'Dominion last night, and barometers,«e now very low ia the far south. ■As a consequence, north-westerly winds have become strong everywhere, galo force being reached in parts of tho Cook Strait area.' These strong winds, according to.the forecast issued at noon today, are likely to continue, but winds during the next twenty-four-hours will back to the south. Unsettled and squally weather may be expected. Bain is likely to be fairly general, with snow on the higher levels and with hail on parts of the coast. Although ■ temperatures will continue mild at first, a cold change may be expected before long. Further rain fell yesterday and last night in nearly all western districts and also in Otago and Southland. Eastern districts, on the other hand, continued to experience fair and dry ennditiont, although by this .morning there had been a general increase in tho amount of cloud. • Temperatures have continued to be mild everywhere. The weather in Auckland yesterday was cloudy and unsettled, frequent showers accompanyipg a westerly breeze. Wellington had a mild and cloudy day. Tho wind was a fresh northwesterly which increased .to gale force during the night. By. 9. a.m. it had achieved a maximum .velocity of 63 miles an hour, but this was. bettered by a very vigorous gust at 11.50 a.m.which had a velocity of 72 miles per hour. Since then there have been several other very strong guats. A fairly heavy shower of rain fell at 7.15 a.m. today, two points being recorded .at Kelburn and eight at Lower Hutt» Christchurch had a mild and sunny day yesterday, but during last night tho north-westerly wind became very blustery and vivid lightning was seen to the westward. The weather-tbere at 0 a.m. today was overcast. The weather in Dunedin yesterday was overcast all day, and some light showers fell. A light northerly wind prevailed. _J .
