ELLIS BACK TO JUMPING
■ ,vm in the, Grand National I Steeplechase.'^on,. Tuesday was made even more attractive by the.superb manner in which lie was handled by iA. E. Ellis, who was haying his first1 ride in a jumping [event since his accident on Snowfall on the final day of last year's Grand National Meeting. Ellis accepted the mount on j Thurina ~6nly last week. '. ' • It will be remembered' that twelve months ago Ellis sustained a broken arm when Snowfall crashed to his death in the Lincoln Steeplechase. The. break i proved a bad one, and after the bone had knitted it was found necessary to rebreak. and reset it. This necessitated Ellis's being I idle for some months, and he did not rei sume riding till the Auckland Summer I Meeting, where he steered Fast Passage jto victory in the Auckland Cup and Silver j Scorn in the Great Northern Derby. ; Since then, Ellis has gradually regained the full -strength of his arm, although unable to straighten it, but on medical advice some time back he decided to give up all idea of riding over fences, at least during the present jumping season. HowI ever, he has always had a leaning towards thel game, and when he had the, chance of piloting such a safe and clever jumper as Thurina has now become he sought medical advice again, and on the result of this he agreed to take the mount. Ellis has an excellent record in regard to the three big winter events at Riecarton, as, in addition to his two successes lin the Steeples, he won the Winter Cup on Solferite in 1927, on Toxeuma in 1930, and on Fast Passage last year, and he captured the Grand National Hurdles on Penury Rose in 1925 and on Wharncliffe in 1927. .. • • - ■-
