SENIOR A CHAMPIONSHIP
WON BY WELLINGTON EAST I
LAST WEEK'S GAMES
Saturday's senior A games decided tho championship competition, Wellington East 1 again securing the trophy. ,The uncertain weather conditions caused a number of teams to field emergencies, and some games could not be played. If a notice of postponement is not up at both the "Evening Post" and Witcombe and Caldwell's by 12 o'clock, the- games are to be played. This has been tho custom for some years past, but unfortunately on Saturday many players expected a notice to be posted up stating: that the games would be played. , With the exception of about five minutes late in the afternoon the games .at Newtowii were played in fine •weather. Great interest was taken in the Wellington East 1-Kia Ora game. Unfortunately during the first half it was realised that Wellington East had transgressed and had played a member of their' other senior A team to replace E. Sinclair, who had not put in an appearance. The game lost a great deal of its interest when it was definite that Wellington East would have to forfeit the game. In tho first half, the Wellington East 1 defence proved too strong for Kia Ora's forwards> who had spoilt their combination by playing M. Howe in centre. This was done with the object of gaining height by including G. MeGurk in goal. At halftime tho score was 9-7. Having rearranged their team, Kia Ora improved in the second spell, and held their own. K. White, who played emergency forward for the College team, proved he? reliability and versatility by combining well with N. Bell and J. Highet. E. Parsons, J. Mitchell, and M. Wilson combined well in defence. The game ended, Wellington East 1, 17; Kia Ora, 15.' . Playing two lower grade emergencies, Wesley found it a hopeless task to stem University's attack. The latter played good-basketball. Their quick passing bringing each member of the team into action. Uncertain positional play by Weslejr allowed University plenty of opportunities for interceptions, and the tall defence players permitted few sec*ond chances at goal. University gained 22 goals to Wesley's 8. Haeremai and Technical O.G. fought a hard game in -which neither side could score well. Plenty of quick passing took the ball from one end of the field to the other, but. it was as quickly returned by the opposing - side. A disappointing game ended Technical O.G. 6, Haeremai.s. The following table, shows the positions of-tho A grade teams:—

Canterbury B v. Wellington B. The annual match between the Wellington and Canterbury B teams for the Muir Cup, will be played at Wellington next Saturday. The game is se,t down for 3.15 p.m: : at Mount- Cook School. A charge of 6d will be- made^ for 'admission. The trophy was brought back from Canterbury by the local representatives Jast. year, and from all' accounts, Canterbury are sendingup a strong side to try to regain it this year. On account of the keen interest of j both players' and' referees, it has been decided that only games which are concerned in championships will be played next Saturday. Owing to the Saturdays lost through wet weather recently, it has been found necessary to play senior B games prior to the big match, i ,As a •curtain-raiser, a game between the Wellington thirds and a team from
"Rixa" one of llio leading secondary schools has been arranged. New Zealand Tournament. The dates definitely arranged for the Now Zealand tournament at Gisljonie are as follows:—First grade (Auckland, Hawku's Bay, Wellington, Canterbury, Otago, and Southland) commence play on Thursday morning, August 2-1, and continue until Saturday. The following re'feyes have been ap pointed:—Miss F. (Auckland), Miss S. Foster (Otagu,; 'Miss X Grigg , (South Canterbury), Miss M. E. Armstrong (Wellington), Miss E. B. Pay (Southland), and Mr. N. Hamilton (Hawke's Bay). Poverty Bay have the tournament arrangements well in hand, and have arranged tho following entertainments for tho visitors: —Thursday night, games aud social; Friday night, pictures or competitions; Saturday night, tournament ball; Sunday afternoon, motor drive. The tournament committee consists of the following:—Mrs. G: H. Sceats (Poverty Bay), Mrs. H. D. Muir (New Zealand executive), Misses C. Miller, E. C. Mead (Poverty Bay), and Miss E. Bell (New Zealand executive). With the' changes at the training colleges several well-known players have changed their provincial colours, j Among these are M. Matangi, Wellington represntative last year, who is now playing for Auckland; L. Eenner, also last .year a Wellington representative, now playing for Wairarapa; J. Mackintosh, well-known ex-Aucklauder, now) playing for Waikato; I. Stuart, oneof j the victorious Otago team, now playing in Auckland; and C. Turner, who has come.to Wellington.from. Auckland. iNew Zealand Council Meeting. Judging from tho list of remits on the agenda paper, delegates to the New Zealand Council meeting can expect a very strenuous time. With tho growth of the game necessitating the formation of sub-associations and a large number of district bodies, it has been suggested that these sub-associations should be permitted to enter teams in the- second grado tournament. Tho Southland Association has submitted a remit to this effect. Should there be no application from the particular Island entitled to have the tournament, the Wellington Association decided to move that the rule be changed to read: "A tournament shall be heia annually, alternately in the North and South Islands, when possible." • • • The Southland Association has also forwarded a remit to, the effect that the tournament shall be Tield biennially, while the New Zealand executive has suggested a first grade and second grade tournament alternately. Apparently the question of expense, and also the increasing number of entries are causing concern in various centres, and there is no doubt that if the number of associations continues to grow, the arrangement of the Dominion tournament will be a problem. The positions of teams in the-third grade are as follows: —
