CHARLESTON SLUICING
The engineer of Charleston Sluicing Co., Ltd., reports that the tunnel, tail-race, 2567 ft in length, the principal job in the company's development work, is completed, 18 weeks from time of starting. In the Buller district alone there are many miles of such tunnels laboriously driven, the debris being trucked the whole distance or hauled up shafts to surface when distance became too great for trucking. In the case of Charleston trucking is eliminated, and Powell Bros, are in charge of the company's operations. Other development work is rapidly drawing to a close, and in from three to four weeks sluicing will commence. ALEXANDER MINES. In the Alexander Mines a reef was intersected in the north drive Bft to the eastward of the eastern block. The Cliristchurch ''Times" Keefton correspondent reports that a strong body of ore was discovered and driven into for four feet without the eastern wall showing. It was clean and solid, and gold was showing in the stone, which was strong underfoot. • DAWN OF HOPE. The mine manager, Dawn of Hope Mine, reports for the week ended August s:— Crosscut driven out to a point some 80ft from Golden Age reef. Most of country passed through was of good class, but country at present in face is of a hard character. No. -3 leader, previously passed through, is from lin to 2in in width and i from small amount of work carried out to date have selected a little stone showing strong dabs of gold. This leader looks promising. Hoping it will make in size as driving proceeds. GOLCQNDA. Golconda reports:—Continued crosscut into hanging wall of reef east, but no more quartz was out, only a few stringers. Gold seen in one. We had another round in the face on the reef, but no gold was seen. In last round bored touched quartz, but more work will have to be done to determine its size. No work done on branch reef north. Have started a stope in south 'block on branch reef, and reef is carrying a fair amount of zinc blende and colours of gold mixed with it.
