GEAR ISLAND
BEAUTIFICATION PLANS
TREE-PLANTING BEGINS
Gear Island is an inviting spot, with its'fresh green grass, and it should be ono of the finest parks in New Zealand when the plans which are at present being drawn up for beautifying tho island arc put into effect. A small amount of improvement work will be done each year, and there is about twenty years' work ahead.before the improvements planned will be fully carried out. In connection with the scheme treeplanting has been commenced, the area being planted being on the west side of the island from North Street to Heretaunga Street. The trees will be on a raised piece of ground and will form a background to the park, shutting out buildings outside the island. Another piece of land on the same side of the island comes under the tree-planting scheme. '. A prominent feature on the plan is a lake that will cover several acres. A drivo will bo formed by extension of North Street to Jackson Street. The stop-bank on the east side of Gear Island will be widened so as to form a carriage-way, and thus, with tho proposed drive, thero will be a carriageway right round the island. Various other improvements will be made to tho island. Tho work will be carried out by the Htitt River Board under tho direction of Mr. E. Ilutt, of tho Lower I-lutt Borough staff, who has planned the, scheme.
