A NEW APPOINTMENT

MR. H. MORGAN, OF INVERCARGILL

The Government has made a further appointment to the Magistracy by the promotion to that office of Mr. Henry Morgan, solicitor, at present Eegistrar of the Supreme Court, Official Assignee, and Clerk of the Magistrate's Court at Irivereargill. The Minister of Justice (the Hon. J. G. Cobbe), in making the announcement today, said that by reason of his long experience in the mining laws of tho Dominion Mr. Morgan would tako up his now duties almost immediately at the Warden's Court, Cromwell, where there were several hundred applications for mining rights to be dealt with by the Court. The new Magistrate is described by those who have come into official contact with him in the administration of the different offices he has held as being an officer of strong personality and sound judgment, and one who has fully profited by his long service in the Courts. Mr. Morgan has spent the whole of his working career in the Justice Department, which branch of the Public Service ho joined as a cadet in 1902. He lias been Clerk of a Magistrate's Court continuously since 1908; qualified as a solicitor about 1913, and was admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court in 1920. In addition, during his service .in Courts throughout New Zealand he has been Eegistrar or Deputy Eegistrar of the Supremo Court sinco 1919-, an Official Assignee since 1928, and has also held several other official positions attaching to Court' offices. APPOINTMENT EXTENDED. The additional work devolving on the Courts of Otago and the West Coast of the South Island due to tho mining boom has caused an extension of the service to December 31 next of Mr. W. Meldrum, S.M., at Greymouth, who reached the retiring age of Stipendiary Magistrates on July 28 last, and who, normally, would have retired on that date. "Tho boom conditions prevailing in mining work in Central Otago and the West Coast," the Minister of Justice today, "have caused an abnormal increase in Court, work in these districts. It is very necessary that this additional work should be coped with expeditiously and satisfactorily, and a new appointment had to be made to tho Magistracy. Mr. Meldrum has been requested to remain in his present office until December 31, when Mr.. H. Morgan, the newly-appointed Magistrate, will take up Mr. Meldrum's work.
