SNUFF-BOX INCOME

Although snuff-boxes are- said to bo among the "best-selling" antiques of today, few of them aro likely to provide the seller with a comfortable income for life, as did a handsome gold specimen which Baron James, de Rothschild once gave a celebrated French composer as a token of esteem. Tho recipient sold it back to the jeweller from .whom it had been purchased recently. News of tho transaction reached the baron and, pitying the musician's poverty, he again purchased the box and gave it to him. Next day it was returned to .the jeweller tbr another £50. Following that the gift and the sale became periodical, and continued until the baron's death, after which one of his sons kept up the comedy, thus providing for - tho composer in his declining years.
