DEFENCE OF AUSTRALIA
TRAINING IN INDIAN ARMY
COASTAL BATTERIES
(Received August S, 11 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The Gonimoiiwealtli defence proposals include the transfer of officers to be trained with tho Indian Army, the purchase of anti-aircraft guns, and the establishment of battories of 9.2-inch guns for coastal defence. Tho reason for sending officers to India is to enable them to gain experience with battalions at war ■ strength. ■ This is impossible in Australia owing to the "military forces at present being below full strength. The proposed new coastal guns will have a range of 31,000 yards. The cost of providing the necessary bat-, teries at Sydney, Newcastle, and Fremantle will be in the vicinity of £200,000. It is expected that the Commonwealth will make a special grant of money for the coastal defences and auti-aircraft guns.
