INGENIOUS SALVAGE
ITALIAN INVENTION..
("Times" Cable.) . j LONDON, August' 7. "The Times" says that the salvage ship Artiglio has arrived at Plymouth, and has landed 162 bars of silver and 13 :of gold; also . 15,000 . sovereigns valued at £36,000 salved from tho sunken liner Egypt. The treasure was" secured by means of -an ingenious vacuum apparatus invented by the chief diver, Marie Baffaelli. The apparatus consists of a tube closed by a special glass covering at tho lower' end. The diver manoeuvres the tube, from which the air is pumped, into the required position. When the glass is broken by a special device, the water rashes in, carrying the scattered coins and bullion. ■ ■ The device, when used for the first time, recovered over 6000 sovereigns, several bars of gold and silver, -weighing over 10,000 ounces. Up to the present £800,000. worth of metal has been recovered from the sunken-vessel; £200,000 worth is still submerge!!.' •
