Cuiied Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received August 8, 11 a.m.) MUNICH, August 7. Michael Schwaninger, an Austrian auxiliary policeman, was shot dead while patrolling the Austrian section of a street in the frontier town of Kufstein. Fifteen men, believed to have been wearing the uniform of the Nazi Labour Carps, fired a volley from a roadside ambush, it is supposed for the purpose of avenging die death of a German Nazi, Johann Kanter, who was shot when he failed to answer the challenge of Austrian sentries. Schwaninger's comrade ■ returned the fire, apparently wounding one of the assailants. Examination shows that the fatal bullet was fired from a German Mauser revolver. Austrian Heimwehr troops were rushed to die frontier, which is closed for traffic in the area of the tragedy. Four arrests include three Austrian Nazis. The authorities assert that the shooting followed a similar attempt on July 5. A tense atmosphere prevails in the Tyrol. The incident assumes •an international importance in view of the British and French presentation of Notes to the German Foreign Office this morning, protesting against Nazi propaganda in Austria. The Berlin newspapers ' simultaneously published an apparently inspired article, attacking Austria's policy. The Vienna Government, asked whether special measures will be taken in connection with the assassination, significantly replied, "Not yet."
