MOKE MONEY NEEDED

MONTH'S ACTIVITIES

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society was held at Red Cross Headquarters, 63 Dixon Street, on Friday. In the absence of Mr. C.H. Chapman, M.P., the chair was occupied by Mr. G. M. Henderson. There were present Mesdamee Tibbs, W. Downes, Brandon, L. Davidson, G. Hendry, G. Lark, W. Waite, C. H. Chapman, Misses Ralston and Kane, Sisters Lewis and. Aitken, Dr. Austin, and Mr. M. S.. Galloway (teeretary). . The chairman reported that, following a request'from the friendß. of'"an. exCanadian soldier now domiciled in the Dominion and suffering from lapse oi memory, the American National Red Cress and the Canadian Ked Cross Society had beeii written,to asking that they endeavour to trace the whereabouts of the-nest-of-kin of this man. From meagre, details available it was thought- that relatives were living in either' of these' two ■ -countries. -■ ■ •'•-■■ :.' ■..'.'.- - Appreciation.was expressed''at the assistance in the form of flannelette -received from the Mayor's- Relief Committee. This had been-made up into layettes and other suitable children's garments for distribution.among .those in need. A donation-.or £25 had also^ been received- for material to be made up for women and children. It was reported'that the Miramar subcentre, had held its annual .meeting at the home of Mrs. A. Crawford. There had been a good attendance, and a strong executive elected with Mrs. A. Crawford as president.. " The Lower Hutt Branch notified that its delegates to the centre executive from their sub-centre would be Mrs. J. Mitchell, president, and Miss Gray, hou. secretary. FIRST-AID OUTFITS. A letter was received from the Town Clerk following an inquiry regarding firstaid outfits on relief jobs, stating that all relief jobs under the council's jurisdiction were equipped with these outfits. A donation of £5 from the secretary, Scales Line, Limited, was gratefully acknowledged. WORK FOR SCHOOL. Mr. F. L. Combs, headmaster of Mount Cook School, wrote expressing appreciation for what had been done by the Ladies Auxiliary for the pupils at the school. "Inter alia, I greatly appreciate your generosity in subsidising £1 for £1 what the Home and Schools' Association is able to rlo," said Mr. Combs. "In the laying out of the money what you have been able to do has more than doubled anything I have ventured to hope. The quality and suitability of everything supplied has greatly added to the value of your assistance. "Will you kindly express to all who have assisted sincere thanks for what they have done so generously and so well." Mrs. Hendry, president of the Ladies' Auxiliary, atated that 216 new garments had been given out to the boys jnd girls at the school, the balance, bl garments, being handed to the 11. and bAssociation for future distribution. The chairman stated that the secretary had attended a meeting in connection with the Wellington Carnival Week. Members felt that tho society should associate itself in every way possible with this function, but it was not in a position to mnke ■my monetary contribution.'Further action «.is refeirp'l to the executive committee lo deal with. The report from the hon. secretary ot the Ladies' Auxiliary ehow«d that during the month 350 articles of clothing,- 29 pairs of boots, 3 quilts, and 5 layettes, also material for making up into garment had been distributed. Thaukß was expressed to Mr. Goldsmith for a large quantity of remnants of material. Theee tho Ladies' Auxiliary had converted into garments for ■ children. FUNDS REQUIRED. The chairman reported that the call on the society's resources still continued heavy, and with a view to augmenting the funds various entertainments had been ai ranged, including a bridge evening at the Royal Oak Hotel on Monday, beptem- °\ 'special vote of thanks was passed to the persons concerned tor this practical assistance, which H was, felt would materially strengthen the society's hands in carrying on the work. The chairman expressed the hope that the public would support the forthcoming endeavoms in every way possible. The hon. secretary of the Upper Hutt sub-centre reported that examinations had been held with satisfactory results. The home-nursing team was "in training for the forthcoming cup competition. The work at-the relief depot wasjstill being carried on;" The St. Patrick's College, Silveretream, was providing the whole of the second half of the programme at^a concert to be held ori September 28, the proceeds to be'devoted to the society in that "district. ■ ■ . . .The- chairman- "reported that Mrs. ,Al. Chatfiekl had written from South Africa,, pointing" out that ehe had visited a number of schools, where little was known, concerning this Dominion. bhe suggested the preparation and forwarding of a portfolio, from the Junior Red Cross circles in New Zealand.
