TWO MEN FOUND GUILTY

i LENIENCY RECOMMENDATION

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WANGANUI, August 7. Joseph Hyman, solicitor's clerk, and Hugh Glover, taxi-driver, both of Auckland, were found guilty by the jury iv the Suprcnrt! Court, Wanganui, today of tho theft of £313 worth of silver from 'William Toomcy, also o£ Auckland. The jury added a rider strongly recommending fenieucy. for Glover on account of his weak intellect and the fact that ho had been led by Hyman, a man of stronger intellect. The jury also commended the very humano action of Detective-Sergeant Doyle, of Auckland, iv looking after Glover's wifo and family while Glover was in hospital. Both prisoners were remanded until Wednesday morning for sentence. Evideneo on tho same lines as that given in" the lower court was given by aeveraJ witnesses, the two principal ones being William Toomey,' retired, and John Ealpb Penny, taxi-driver, Auckland. Penny is at prosent undergoing a sentence of 18 months' imprisonment for theft of some money. Mr. V. B. Willis, for Glover, said that his client had been guilty of nothing but crass stupidity, and had been under the influence of Hyman. Mr. J. Hussey, for Hyman, submitted that the two taxi-drivers, Glover and Penny, had 'formulated the scheme. His Honour, summing up, said that it1 was obvious that Hyman, Glover, and, Penny had all known what was hap-' pening. j
