A USEFUL GHOST
A number of people are living1 in Clapham, London, lent free—all because of a ghost.' At least that is what they claim. Tho house in which, they have flats is the Old Manor House, and the story goes that it is haunted by the spirit of a Roman Catholic priest who was left there- to die by Cromwell's troopers 300 years ago* The landlord disappeared two years ago, and since then no attempt has been mado to collect rents. Living over the priest's unsauetificd grave, the tenants state that they arc constantly terrified by trampings up and dowu in the night and low moans. They would move gladly, but they are too poor, and—thoro is no rent to pay. Mrs. Spinks, who has lived in the house for twelvo years, said lately that she has often been awakened by eerie noises. "One woman tenant had a dog Which would not keep still in the house," she added. "It twitched and howled, and I have seen.it snarl ajid back suddenly from something that we coilld not sec."
