HAYWARDS RESERVE
DANGER OF FIRE
PROTECTION NECESSARY;
Since the George Memorial Park' a* Hay wards was given to the city.in 1924J comparatively little work had been; carried out there, said the Director ofl Parks'and Reserves jn a report to thd rosorvos committee. Access paths lad. been formed and; tho. flat near the river; kept clear of gorge. _/.. _ : "The only•'-condition attached to this gift by Sir, and' Mrs. Gepi-gftwas that.' tho City Council: Should make, its bests endeavours in: the.-future .to have the] adjoining Silverstream Scenic Reserve; opened up for .the use of. the public,** said Mr. MacKenzie.. "This seenta rtservo, of 165 acres, is a splendid bifci of bush, and only requires to be opened! up to be appreciated. The control ofi this reserve is at present vested iv thai Hutt County Council* but from time to time the Commissioned of Crown Landa has approached the City Council with! requests that it administer.the reserve* which is at present closed to the public, I am of the opinion that we should do oifr best to keep faith with the> donors of tho Memorial Park in this respect. - "If this was done, and a pai't-timft, caretaker appointed the valuable* buslil might be saved ior all time. If nothing is done it is quite likely that in th« first dry season the reserve will go *L)i in snioic. The public are patronising the Memorial Park in increasing numbers ev.Ory year. Quite-a number eamj* on the river bank, and there is always tho flre dangor. If the proposed rosdi and bridgo are made some supervisiort to save the bush will bo . absoltttelyj necessary." ■
