CORRESPONDENCE
CARTER BEQUEST
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—Will you please allow me space in which to refer to an article in tonight's "Post" on the subject of the Carter bequest? First, I should like it clearly understood that I have no authority to speak for anyone but myself; but,- as I was convenor of the observatory 'committee of the New Zealand Institute, the committee whose report is referred to in your article, I wish to avoid any needless complication o£ the issue. It is true that the report was referred to the Standing Committee, when, in my opinion, it should have been dealt with by the board of governors itself, but subsequent resolutions gave the standing committee power, as 1 understand the position', to. take action. I understand that a meeting of the standing committee is to be held in this month to consider the matter, and, further, that an attendance adequate for such an important consideration could not have been secured earlier. I suggest to the members of the New Zealand Astronomical Society that it would be very unbecoming to try to bring pressure , to' bear oii the Institute by means of a public discussion at this time.—l am, etc., H. B. KIRK. August 2.
