DRAIN ON GREAT BRITAIN

(From "The/Post's" Representative.) : LQNDON, Juno 23. Mr. Hacking, replying to a question in the House of Commons by Mr. Lambert (South Moltoii, L.Nat.) said that on the assumption that the amount subscribed in Great Britain to the sweepstakes promoted by the Hospitals Trust, Limited, Dublin, was proportionate to tho-prizes known to J&ayo. been won in this country, tho Boyal Commission on Lotterios and Betting calculated that up to and including tho sweepstake on the Grand National, 1933, a sum of £18,745,000 was subscribed in Great Britain. On the same basis it was estimated that £2,500,000 was subscribed in Great Britain to tho sweepstake- on tho Derby, 1933. As to the question of tli'o publication by newspapers of prizes, prizewinners, and other aids to gambling, that was one of the matters which his Majesty's Government would consider in tho light of the recommendations mado in* the report of the Koyal. Commission. • • Mr. Lambert: Having regard to the magnitude of these figures, may I ask whether tho Government lias any power to prevent crazy British people contributing to tho reveaup of this defaulting Irish State.l Sir 11. Samuel (Darwon, L.): Has the hon. gentleman any figures to hand to show how much of the amount subscribed was spent, on expenses, how much went to tho hospitals, and how much to tho rovenuo of tho Irish Free State? Mr. Hacking: No, I have not got that information available.
