PEDIGREE STOCK

THE QUARANTINE STATION

(From "The Post's"' Representative.) LONDON, Juno 9. Iv view of Lord Bledisloc's statement in regard to the import of pedigree stock into New Zealand, a para-1 graph in the Empire Marketing Board 'a \ report which relates to the London j Quarantine Station may be of interest. I Tho station (says the report) con-,! iinues to prove of great value in facilitating the export of podigroo livestock I to oversea Empires countries. Tho i number of animals' which have passed through tho station since' its opening in 1928 now totals 2352. These animals have gone to Australia, the'"Union of South Africa, Northern Ireland, tho Irisli Free State; Southern and Northern Rhodesia, Nigeria, tho Gold Coast, Trinidad, Antigua, Cyprus, and Palestine. ' An important development in the past year is that, under tho provisions of "the United Kingdom-Canada Trade Agreement concluded at the Ottawa Conference, the station has been t recognised J>y- tho Canadian, Govern-! ment. That Government has notified : officially its -willingness to allow the import into Canada of' pedigree cattle, sheep, goats, other ruminants, and swino from Great Britain provided that the animals have been .quarantined at the station for 14 days immediately preceding embarkation for Canada. The effect of this is that theMmporfc of such stock into Canada is now permitted during periods "when the United Kingdom is not entirely free from foot-and-mouth disease. The five years period for which the board's grant to the station was originally.approved expired at Dceembor 31, 1932.' Owing to tho economical and efficient administration., of-the station by the Royal Agricultural. Society of England, a balance from .the grant remained unspent at that date, and the board has agreed -that this unspent balance may be used for continuing the station's work. The board again wishes .to express its appreciation of the valuable services of the Royal Agricultural Society of England in the management of the station.
