DRY WEATHER PLANTING

CABBAGES AND CAULIFLOWERS

When planting cabbages tho soil should be very firm, as.loose soil tends to make the plants grow flabby and soft. However, firm soil usually contains a large number of woed3, and these should be cleared by hoeing tho ground. Then the lino should be fsct and a number of holes mado with a dibber. These holes should bo filled with water, which should bo allowed to drain away. While this is going on tho. plants nfiiy be lifted from tho secdbod and the lower portion of tho root cut off. They should then bo tied in bundles and allowed to stand in a bowl of muddy water for about an hour. This allows the plants to draw up a supply of water. Then the plants should, be placed in the holes, and the soil be pressed firmly round them. A little dry soil on the surface around each plant will prevent immediate evaporation of the moisture. If tho tops of tho plants are. dipped into a solution of arseuato of lead beforo planting this will protect them against attacks of "fly."
