HERE AND THERE
Lower Hutt Knox Ladies' Guiia. A literary programme was a feature of the recent meeting of the Lower Hutt Knox Ladies' GuiW, when, a very interesting and enjoyable afternoon was spent. Mrs. Wilson presided; and extended a hearty welcome to the 70 ladies present, expressing pleasure that new members continued to join up. The roll call was responded to with excellent quotations, a.nd readings by Mrs. Shaw and Mrs. Eowan were enjoyed. A one-act play, entitled "The Grand Cham's Diamond,". won much applause, being splendidly read and acted by Mrs. Paterson, Mrs. Evans, Mrs. Anderson, Mrs. Macky, and Miss Paterson. Tho hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs. Shaw, Mrs. Nicol, Mrs. Smaile, Mrs. Hopkirk, ana Mrs. Scott, who served a delicious tea. Business in connection with the annual sale was discussed. Tho secretary (Mrs. Whitcher) will bo pleased to receive goods and oHers of assistance. . Farewell Presentation. . The staff of the* Defence- Department met recently to bid farewell to Miss Vora McManus,. who has been a member of the Department for tho past sixteen years, and who left today by tho "Wanganella for Melbourne, where she is to be married. Mr. H. Turner, Under-Secretary of Defencey referred to Miss MeManuate loyal and efficient services to the Department, and assured her that the good wishes-of'the staff would go with her. Miss McManus was the recipient of a charming cliiiia teaset. Major Forgie responded on behalf of Miss McManus, and thanked the staff for their good wishes and handsome present, and also paid a tribute to her services while a member of the staff of the Department. Spilt Ink Club. ,! Delivering a short address on ''Personalities in Modern Continental Literature" at last night's meeting of the Wellington branch of,the Spilt Ink Club, which was held at the residence of Mrs. Saundcrs, Tinakori Road, Mr. E. Douglas Saunclers mentioned the work of Baudelaire,. Gantier, and Muntlie and read short illustrative passages from books by these authors. At the conclusion of Mr.. Saunders?s address, whiek was greatly appreciated by members, an interesting discussion ensued. •■.'■■
