TRADE CONDITIONS
EXTERNAL SATISFACTORY
STATISTICIAN'S ANALYSIS
"Evening Post," August 3. ''•'Wool lias taken a turn for the better.1' "Butter has failed to induce a favourable market response to the increased quantities shipped overseas." . "Cheese fairly firm, with casing off fit the close of the month." "The frozen meat trade was strong and active early in June and generally maintained a firm tone throughout the month." These sentences, taken from the Government Statistician's analysis of overseas trade returns for the month of June, are descriptive of the position occupied by fche Dominion's chief exports at the end oi' thi9 half-year. The same authority observes that >t would" appear from the statistics of bank debits placed to individual customers' accounts (exclusive of Government accounts) that "general business conditions during June were on much the same level as a year ago. It is possible, of course, that exchange and sales tax influences may have been sufficient to maintain the- relative level of internal trade as measured by the index of bank debits. Advances have fallen away steadily in recent months, but it seems reasonable to assume that this is principally due to the improving balance of trade. A certain shrinkage in business enterprise may be a contributing factor, however, as is suggested by the resumption in the flow of deposits "from free to fixed terms. The ratio of free to. fixed deposits now stands at 49.77 per cent., as compared with 51.40 per ceut. for the previous month. "The overseas trade position continues aatisfaetory." Movements in.principal items of export are shown in the following summary:—
