THEFT OF A WALLET
MAN SENT TO GAOL
The- theft of a wallet containing £5 15s, the property of Frank S. Maugham, was admitted'by. Henry John Thac* well, a labourer, aged 48, in the Magistrate's Court today, before Mr. E. Page, S.M., and ho was sentenced to six months' imprisonment. Detective-Sergeant Bevell said that up to Juno last the accused was a resident Of Auckland, and was very friendly with people- named Mangliam. He used to visit their home frequently, and on Juno 7 he borrowed £1 from Maugham. Maugham kept Ins money in his bedroom, and when he handed the loan to the accused he disclosed its biding place. A few days later the accused called at Maugham's house, and'when opportunity presented itself ho stole tho wallet. The same mght ho camo to Wellington, whore he was arrested. He admitted stoalmg the wallet, and said -h6 had spent tlio money. . ~ , . Tho accused hjid fi substantial list- of previous convictions for theft aml brenldng and entering. Addressing tho Court, tlie aceusotl said ho was out of work and had no money and n° home. He also had matrimonial troubles.
