POLYDORA'S VICTORIES
NOW OUT, OF HACK RANKS
Polydora, now ruling as one of the first fancies for the Winter' Cup next Tuesday, did not pass the hack limit till her success in the Brabazon Handicap at the Christchurch Hunt Meeting last Saturday. With her latest win, which brings her sequence to four, she has notched seven successes worth £521, and when minor placings are added her stake-earn-ings to date amount to £638. This just turned five-year-old mare did not race at two or three years, aud she made her debut on November 12 last, when she ran unplaced in^ the Seymour Handicap at Riccarton. At Ashburton on December 3 she was second to Denise over six furlongs, and a fortnight later was unplaced in the five furlong Trial at Riccarton. The West Coast courses did not suit her, and she struck much trouble in her races over there at Christmas and the New Year. Twice- she was runner-up at Hokitika to White Doe over seven furlongs. Then she won over the same distance at Omoto and Reef ton. Both of these wins were gained in style similar to that of her gallant victory last Saturday. At Riccarton at Easter Polydora was unplaced ill the Autumn Plate, but only just lost the Addington Handicap, one mile, to Chief Light. Don Jose beat her over seven furlongs at Omotb: on. April 24, and Cranford defeated her over a mile ■at Ashburton iv May. At Wingatui she won' the mile Brighton Handicap, but was beaten by Red Boa-in the seven furlong Farewell Handicap. In succession she has since won over a mile at Washdykd, over a mile and a quarter at Ashburton, over a mile at Oamaru, and over seven furlongs at Riccarton. . *Polydora was bred by her owner, Mr. G. Hall, but her dam, Sweet Smile, was bred by Sir' George Clifford. Polazel, sire of Polydora, was by Pplymelus. Sweet Smile is by San 'Francisco (son of St. Simon) from Winning Way (dam of Winning Hit)/ by Cannie Cbiel (son of Clanranald). from Lady Wayward (sister to Tomorrow), by Bill of Portland (eon of St. Simon) from Elusive, by Trenton (son of Musket) from Eleusis, by Barcaldine. Giggleswick, an older half-sister to Polyr dora, was a useful performer for Mr. Hall, and has since done well since her sale last season to a West Coast owner.
