VERY FAST FIGURES!

BUT MISTAKE WAS MADE

Winnagan's time of -Imin 35s ec was sufficient to show that the Whirokino Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase at Foxton on Saturday either was run over a much shorter distance than the advertised two miles and a half, or that something was wrong vith the timekeeper's watch. The timekeeper's watch need not Lre blamed, for the race was run at a full furlong or ; more short of the schedule distance. Apparently there was confusion as from ; where the start should be. When the sig- .' rial for starting was given the horses were lined up at the mile and a quarter bar- . rier, which would have made the distance traversed just under .2% miles, measured by the galloping track, for.the Foxtou course is, a few yards short of one mile. The clerk of the course noted the mistake that - was about to be made, and he reached the barrier in time to prevent the dispatch. The horsea then went back about a furlong to the front of one of the obstacles, and they started from th,ere, which still made the distance very considerably short. The fences were nearly across the uar•row track, and horses jumping the inside like Winnagan were never more than a few yards from the inside rail, so that not much more than the course distance would have been covered. At the Rangitikei Hunt Meeting, Winnagan required smin 23% sec to travel over the IVz miles Hunt Cup Steeples course. On the first day at Trentham last month, on a fair track, Thurina took" smin .30 eec in<the,2%-mile Matai Hack Steeples, but at Trentham the distances are considerably longer; than named, owing to the steeplechase course being on the remote outside of the track. On the second day at Trentham Jen traversed the same course in flmin 28'/2sec. It should be obvious enough that Saturday's 4min 35scc at Foxton was "altogether wrong for Vk miles. Why, even the Grand National ' Hurdles (2% miles) has never been done in faster time than 4min 41aec!
