LONDON HIDES MARKETS

Weddell and Co., reporting on the New Zealand hide markets in London, state (June 15):—"In New- Zealand hides there has been a complete absence of interest, and shippers are disinclined to offer. .The. present values of freezer ox and freezer cows are about 5%d and 5%d respectively." The position as at June 22 was that "on the miscellaneous and colonial markets' trade has been a good deal quieter. Shippers have not come down very much, and buyers have been holding back. New Zealand freezers are nominally held dlor 5%d, but only limited business is possible thereat. Abattoirs, on the other hand, could probably be got at 4 7-Bd." In the leather market the report was as follows:—"In the leather- business, a further considerable clearance hast been made, and there is now a very short supply of offal.- Prices, continue to rise, but arc finding' it -difficult to keep paco with the price •of raw material. Thero are two main factors which will-affect future Acvelopments. One is the United States, upon whose "further buying all ' markets are waiting, and the other is" the World Economic Conference. If there is any indication that the much-'-demandedrise in wholesale 'priced is going to' be effected by •" the latter, .it appears certain that nothing can prevent a further rise in hide values." ■ .. •
