Fifty-five years' service on behalf of education in New Zealand is the record of Mr. H. Denipsey, of New Plymouth, who celebrated his eighty-first birthday] on Saturday. Mr. Dempsey was bora ia County Antrim, Ireland; and after somo years in the teaching profession there came out to New Zealand: in 1871. He was soon appointed headmaster of tho Ashburton Borough School, a position which ho held until his appoint* incut to tho Central School, New Ply* mouth, in 1885. He became a temporary inspector during the war years* after twenty-nine years' service at! the Central School. Mr. Dempsey was elected to the Taranaki Education Board ia ,1921, and is still a valued member of that body.

Judge Harvey, who was welcomed as a new Judge of the Native Land Court at Hastings last week, was previously registrar of the Native Land. Court at Gisborne, where'he was land purchase officer and land consolidation officer, while for a time he also held the position of Commissioner of' tha Nativo Land Court. He has had wide experience in all matters relating to Native lands and tho customs and usage* of the Native race. During, a long association with the Maori people he has earned the confidence and goodwill of- the Maoris. Reference was" made at the sitting of the Court to the recent passing of Judge Rawson, of the Natiys Land Court in Wellington, and the pre* siding Judge was requested to convey messages of condolence to the relative's of the deceased Judge. \
