THE ANIMALS' NIGHT

(Original, by "Boy Chevalier."); Great excitement was evident everywhere in Animal Land. A huge party had been arranged for the very next Wednesday. All the animals were invited, and there would be games, competitions, and dancing, with a grand* supper afterwards. Every single animal began either to make or renovate his or her party clothes, so that the "Land wherein all animals dwell" was as busy as a beehive. . Just after dusk the first guests arrived in the persons of Mr. and.Mrs. Kangaroo, very becomingly dressed. It j was not long before other guests arrived, and soon the only family not present were their Royal Majesties King Leo and his Queen. However, the assembled guests had not long to wait, for the honoured couple appeared and walked calmly between the rows of guests, acclaimed on all sides by everyone present. Formalities over, the party was soon in full swing. The green was dotted with the bright colours of the intermingling dancers, while around the sides those not wishing to dance were indulging in the many games and competitions. In this manner the evening passed all too quickly for the joyous guests. Then supper was declared ready at eleven-thirty, and all trooped to. the feast. Their expectations were fully justified, for it was magnificent, all the animals being provided for, even to carrots for Mr. and Mrs. Ass. All enjoyed it thoroughh', and afterwards began to wend their way homeward, in I twos and threes.

Every subject of King Leo and his Queen reached home sublimely happy that night, even Mr. and Mrs. Hedgehog, the smallest of all the guests.
